There are fifty rules in this book. Wow, that's a lot! Way too many, in fact. How can I possibly remember, let alone live by so many rules? And whose rules are these anyway???

You'll soon discover, I hope, that in fact you are already abiding by many, if not most of these rules. Some are very simple, short and easy. Others might not really apply to you. You might find that many of these are already your own rules, even though you might not have thought of them in that way before. And perhaps some will hit home like a cannon ball landing on a feather bed.

Hopefully you'll find some gems in here; some little bits of wisdom and experience that you can relate to in a personal way and will make you say, "Yes, I've done that before. I guess I need to really think about this more."

The word 'rule' really has some negative connotations, especially for me. My first instinct when I see the word 'rule' is to figure out how to break it. But when I combine the word 'rule' with the word 'life', I hope it takes on a more mellow sentiment. My long-lived recalcitrant nature has many times gotten me into trouble but also helped me to figure out how the world works. Pushing boundaries is, for me, a big part of what life is all about.

My rules are, in reality, just guidelines-guidelines that should be very obvious and yet somehow in an ever more complicated world, we tend to overlook the basics. The Rules of Life originated when, after making the same mistakes over and over again, I determined to learn some lessons so I wouldn't keep repeating my blunders. I decided to write down the lessons I learned and from this sprang my Rules. Everyone has lessons they've learned-I've just written mine down. And I guess I've made a lot of mistakes to give me the inspiration to come up with all these rules!

At first I thought that ten rules would make a nice round number, and indeed it took me a while to get there: after all, I really didn't like rules. But after realizing that mistakes are bad and the lessons you learn from them are good (as long as you learn them well), I concluded that the only way to avoid those same mistakes was to come up with a set of personal rules and over time the list kept growing.

The 50 Rules of Life is a quick and easy read for all ages-great for someone going through difficult life changes or reading with your children-one rule a day for 50 days. It makes a great gift for friends, family and co-workers since it applies to everyone.
